THE UK’S RICHARD TRING NAMED THE APPLETON ESTATE JAMAICA RUM INTERNATIONAL BARTENDER CHAMPION
Kingston – Jamaica, Monday October 29, 2012: Richard Tring from the United Kingdom is named the 2012 Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum International Bartender Champion. Tring scored this victory with his newly crafted ‘ Independence Punch.’ The competition took place this past Friday, at the Wyndham Kingston Hotel. Skilled international ‘mixologists’ from as far away as New Zealand had gathered in Kingston to compete in the competition.
Tring won an all-expense-paid vacation in Jamaica. All drinks made by the nine competing bartenders were completely original and the winner was chosen by popular vote during Friday’s mix off.
“This is an awesome win!” exclaimed the champion. “It’s been a difficult competition with so many strong bartenders all in one place, but I am very happy about this.”
Other overseas contenders were: Jonathan Homier representing Canada; Australia’s Jamie Chesher; Seggrett “Seggy” Quizeo of the Cayman Islands; Salvador Pacheco representing Mexico; Jason Clark from New Zealand; Daniel Melgar competing for Peru; and Ben Clemons of the US.
“This has been a very good opportunity,” remarked Quizeo “I love Jamaica and, and I’ll never forget this moment in time.”
In order to qualify, each finalist had to win the Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum Bartender Challenge in his respective country. At Friday’s event each finalist was presented with a “special creation” rum, crafted by J. Wray & Nephew’s award winning Master Blender, Joy Spence, for participating in the International Challenge.
Representing Jamaica was Ryan Mitto, who won the 2012 Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum Bartender Challenge here in September. “It’s been a great privilege to represent Jamaica in this competition, especially because it’s Jamaica’s 50th, ”noted Mitto.
The group visited Papine market and several supermarkets in the Corporate Area on the eve of the International Challenge, to purchase local ingredients for their cocktail at the finals. During one of the supermarket stops, the finalists enjoyed a chance meeting with Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.
Cecil Smith, Marketing Manager for Owned Brands at J. Wray & Nephew Limited explained, “The Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum International Bartender Challenge represents a chance for the bartending profession to be showcased on the world stage, and to further promote the standing of the profession locally.”
